One person died and another was seriously injured in a blaze that destroyed a Roxbury home Saturday morning, fire officials said.

Boston firefighters were called to the two-story George Street home just after 8:30 a.m. and found the house completely engulfed in flames, according to the Boston Fire Department’s Twitter feed.

The apparently abandoned structure was known to house several squatters. Firefighters were unable to search the structure as flames shot high above the house.

The identity of the person killed in the fire wasn’t disclosed by fire investigators.

Eleven people were evacuated from neighboring homes when the fire department was forced to shut off the electricity and water, WCVB reported.

It took firefighters four hours to knock down the flames. Firefighter were forced to call in a crane to remove debris as they continued to work, making sure all the flames were extinguished.

The cause of the blaze was still under investigation Sunday.
