The computer-generated photo of a young girl found dead on Deer Island two weeks ago, and has since reached millions online, has been updated to include a pair of earrings investigators say the toddler wore. It’s a small addition to the image, produced by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children based on information from the state’s chief medical examiner. It’s also another glimpse into the life of the toddler, who after an extended search and a widespread awareness campaign still remains unidentified. Who she was, what happened to her, and who might be responsible, remain mysteries. Even a cause of death for the four-year-old, who has been dubbed “Baby Doe,” remains unknown pending results of a toxicology test.
Authorities have asked for help from the public, pleading with those who may have noticed a girl missing from their neighborhood or at picnics and barbeques to come forward. Many have, but police say they have investigated every tip that has come their way and in each case have found the girls in question safe at home. The girl is described as white or Hispanic with brown hair and brown eyes, standing three feet tall and weighing roughly 30 pounds. She was reportedly wearing black-and-white polka dot leggings and her body was found with a zebra-striped blanket. A woman walking her dog found the girl inside a plastic bag on the shores of Deer Island June 25.
