A 31-year-old “emotionally disturbed man” was shot and killed by police early Sunday in Boston’s South End.

A woman called 911 from her Shawmut Avenue apartment to say her son was out of control. Both police and Boston EMS responded, WCVB reported.

After police arrived, a struggle ensued and the man pulled out a knife. The man allegedly swung repeatedly at officers and EMTs, and they were unable to get the knife away, police said.

Officer fired their weapons, killing the man, whose identity wasn’t disclosed by investigators.

“Unfortunately it turned ugly,” Boston police Commissioner William Evans said to reporters after the shooting. “The officers intervened. They tried to disarm, and unfortunately, he just kept coming at the officers and it left them no choice right now.”

Several EMTs and police officers are being treated for head and back injuries suffered during the struggle.
