A Roxbury man is under arrest on burglary and weapons charges after police said they were able to catch him when his long jacket got stuck in the spokes of his getaway bicycle.

Officers responded to a reported burglary just after 7 p.m. Sunday in the area of 60 Wait Street, where they learned a suspect entered an apartment and stole several items, including a laptop computer, before fleeing on a blue bicycle.

Investigators were able to obtain a detailed description from witnesses, and later said they saw Andre Hopkins, 47, quickly riding a blue bike near Shawmut Avenue and Dudley Street.

Police said they followed Hopkins for “several blocks” until the winter jacket he was holding got stuck in the spokes of his bike, causing it to suddenly stop. Officers said they saw a long shotgun hidden underneath the jacket, which fell to the ground when the garment got stuck in the wheel.

Hopkins allegedly struggled with officers as he was arrested, reportedly repeatedly yelling “What did I do? What did I do?”

Police said they also found the missing laptop and other stolen items in Hopkins’s possession. He was also later positively identified by a witness.

Hopkins is due in Roxbury Court on charges of carrying a rifle or shotgun on a public way, unlawful possession of ammunition, breaking and entering, resisting arrest and trespassing, though his next court date was not immediately available.
