Charges dropped against man who wore bullet belt on Boston bus

Charges have been dropped against a Watertown man arrested Friday for boarding an Allston bus while wearing a belt made out of fake bullets.

Kevin Young, 26, apparently inspired a ruckus on the bus, when passengers saw the lookalike bullets strapped to his waist and started calling police, fearing an impending attack, police said in a release.

Police stopped Young – who was also wearing “spiked fighting gloves” and spiky bracelets – at around 4:20 p.m. on Penniman Road, where officers learned the bullets, 69 in all, were not real.

“Responding officers acted in an abundance of caution after a 911 call for a man believed to be armed,” said Suffolk DA spokesperson Jake Wark in an email Monday. “Based on the totality of circumstances, however, including confirmation that the cartridges on said belt could not and weren’t intended to be fired, prosecutors dismissed the charges.”

Young was arraigned at Brighton Municipal Court on charges of unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carried dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct. All charges were dropped.

State law prohibits carrying bullets without a license.
