Police are searching for a 28-year-old Chelsea man who escaped police custody while being treated for injuries at Massachusetts General Hospital early Saturday morning.

Mose Tene was taken to the hospital just after midnight Friday with non-life threatening injuries after he was in a single car crash on Highland Avenue in Chelsea.

Police later learned that the car Tene was driving was reported stolen and that Tene himself had outstanding warrants and was not properly licensed.

Unable to process Tene at police headquarters, Chelsea Police stationed an officer at the hospital to watch him until he could be booked or arraigned in district court.

Around 6 a.m. Saturday, Tene left his hospital room and escaped. Police say Tene’s criminal record does not suggest he poses a threat to the public. Still, authorities are warning the public that if spotted, he should not be approach and police should be called immediately.

Police issued a bulletin for his arrest and have released an RMV photo of Tene, with the caveat that the photo is old and his physical appearance may have changed.

No further details were available.
