A car pile-up possibly involving more than 20 cars snarled traffic on 95 Sunday afternoon for hours.

State Police report that the crash occurred on I-95 southbound, just north of Exit 27 in Waltham.

According to State Police the crash “may involve in excess of 20 vehicles.”

A snow squall, according to police, may have caused the crash, which prompted all travel lanes of the interstate to be closed down. Police asked motorists to stay away from the area. All injuries suffered in the crash were believed to be minor. The crash comes after a storm dumped more than a foot of snow on some parts of the state; Gov. Charlie Baker earlier in the day had implored motorists to stay off the roads.

By 4 p.m., three of the lanes were back open and public safety crews were still clearing the scene.

State Police continue to investigate the crash.
