Kanye West’s tweets spark abortion controversy

Kanye West performs on stage at the Melbourne stop of the Good Vibrations Festival 2008 at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on February 9, 2008 in Melbourne, Australia.

Justin Bieber’s not the only celeb getting in trouble for spouting off about abortion.

The week after the teen pop star told Rolling Stone that abortion was "like killing a baby," Kanye West also took up the issue. But unlike Bieber, a 16-year-old who just seemed ambushed and caught out of his depth on the whole thing, the outspoken West issued his opinions in a random series of tweets, for no apparent reason beyond the fact that he is Kanye West and this is the sort of thing he does:

"An abortion can cost a ballin’ n—-s up to 50gs maybe a 100. Gold
diggin’ b—–es be getting pregnant on purpose. #STRAPUP my n——s!"

"It ain’t happen to me but I know people."

Opposing abortion is one thing (tough issue, sensitive subject, etc.) but in most circles, postulating that women who get abortions became pregnant on purpose as part of a plot to extort money from successful men will not earn you a reputation as a thoughtful and progressive person. The negative reaction from the Twittersphere was swift, most sharply encapsulated in a tweet by British pop star Lily Allen:

"Never has a tweet put me in such a bad mood. This is wrong on so many levels."

Pop stars! We know you think your opinions matter. (Sometimes they do!) But unless you want to make a lot of people mad and sound ignorant at the same time, you should probably stay away from expressing your opinions of abortion, whatever they are. (via EW)
