‘Thor’ still mighty at box office
“Thor” reigned at the box office for a second weekend, as the women’s comedy “Bridesmaids” beat expectations to come in second.
According to studio estimates issued yesterday, the Marvel comics 3-D film “Thor,” about the earthly adventures of the god of thunder, sold $34.5 million in tickets over the weekend while “Bridesmaids” did $24.4 million in sales.
Action movie “Fast Five,” in its third week at theaters, had a strong showing with $19.5 million and came in third, leaving fourth place to the action horror flick “Priest,” which opened with $14.5 million.
“Thor” opened last week with sales of $66 million. Its second weekend in theaters was considered strong by box office analysts. The $24.4 million total for “Bridesmaids” is at least $10 million higher than expectations, says Paul Dergarabedian, head of tracking firm Hollywood.com Box Office.
