A Mighty Mighty long time

Like many musicians, Mighty Mighty Bosstones frontman Dicky Barrett pulls double-duty career-wise and, for the past 10 years, has kept his day job as announcer for the late night chat show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

“Besides the Bosstones, this is the longest job I’ve had,” Barrett says. “I’m very employable. I’m a hard worker and I have a good track record. If I get a job, I hang onto it.”

This is certainly true of the bi-coastal Barrett’s role in ska-punk originators the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The Boston band celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2013, and the annual Hometown Throwdown marks its 15th seasonal spree this year.

“I can’t let anything go, can I?” jokes Barrett.

Maybe he’s a hoarder, then?

“No, God no! Those people infuriate me. I watch that show and scream at them, ‘Please throw that away, it’s a gum wrapper!’

“Originally,” he says, back on subject, “the Throwdown was a reason to make Christmas more special. We were away touring so much and this was a reason to have our feet firmly in Boston. Come Christmastime, we’d be in Boston to celebrate with our favorite fans. I still love being in the city at this time of year. I don’t mind Los Angeles; I have an awesome job there. But when I get to Boston, I feel like it’s where I belong and where I’m supposed to be. I feel at home.”

How will the Bosstones celebrate their 30th year?

“Ah, I’m so old,” Barrett exclaims jovially. “1983 is a difficult time to remember. I was a young man and I did a lot of drinking. In celebration, I promise to do more shows and maybe we’ll make a 30th anni-versary album. But it’s kind of putting it right in people’s faces: ‘Here’s an old band.’ But it seems like there’s another rec-ord in us. I feel like I have things to say still, and I’m anxious to say them. Whe- ther anyone cares to listen is neither here nor there. It’s never stopped us before.”
