Reddit Brony says he was fired for loving ‘My Little Pony’

One disgruntled Brony, as adult male “My Little Pony” fans are called, complained on Reddit that he was let go from his job for his choice of TV show.

Reddit user FiredBrony explained his situation to the “My Little Pony” community and stressed that he didn’t let his love of the show distract him from his job. “I think of myself as a fairly big fan, but I’m not one of those people who walk around with a shirt of Rainbow Dash 24/7,” wrote FiredBrony.

He said his first offense was changing his computer background to a picture of one of the cartoon characters, and when his boss confronted him about the picture, he changed it back. Then, during take your child to work day, FiredBrony’s boss’s daughter came in wearing a Rainbow Dash shirt and more trouble brewed. “I told her I liked her shirt, something innocent the same way people go ‘those are some cool shoes’ to a kid, nothing weird at all. After the day is done, my boss brings me into his office and confronts me about it, telling me again he thinks it’s weird and to cut it out at work.’”

Finally, last week FiredBrony’s coworkers were discussing Brony culture, which has become something of an Internet phenomenon, and began to mock FiredBrony. “Then yesterday my boss called me into his office, told me people were uncomfortable working with me and that they were going to have to let me go,” he wrote. “Can they even fire me for that?”

Though the father of a 10-year-old boy seemed humiliated by his treatment in the office, he was glad to leave his “boring” 9-to-5 job and says he has better job options on the horizon. He closed his post on Reddit by saying, “Now if you’ll excuse me I’ve got some My Little Pony to watch.”

Bronies have become the Trekkies of the 21st century, capturing the attention of curious people who can’t understand why grown men would spend their spare time watching “My Little Pony.” One filmmaker even made a documentary about them called “Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony” that chronicles the diverse adult fans of “My Little Pony” and their backstories. There is also an annual BronyCon in the U.S. for fans of the show.
