Friday new music roundup: Miniboone, XNY, Orca Orca and more

This monthly feature highlights recently released tracks by bands from the Northeast, focusing on local acts from New York and Boston.

This month’s Friday New Music Roundup comes in a few days late as we’ve been exploring the music Internet’s hidden depths. It was worth it though, as we found a swell garage rock throwback act, a folk punk duo with gusto and a band that Cake would be proud of.

Miniboone, a four-piece act from New York named after a neutrino experiment, finally released their self-titled debut album, which was five years in the making. A mix of power pop with hints of new wave, their palpable happiness is first and foremost on the album. Listen to their single, “I Could, I Could,” a hopeful song full of power riffs, keys and the anticipation of something larger.

Here at Locally Amped, we grew up on tracks based simply in guitar, drums and vocals, so it’s nice to hear a song so simple that it can take on a life of its own. Vocalist Pam Autuori leads XNY, a NYC-based duo, in a passionate tale called “Ride On” that eventually drives into a singalong chorus.

Orca Orca is one of those bands we’ve been meaning to see live in Boston but keep missing. “Climb,” a self-recorded single off their latest effort “Tidals,” continues lead singer/guitarist Jimmy Hewitt’s trend of producing dreamy, jangly tracks. Just as notable is their tireless self-run promo and touring, which we hope will translate into something more soon.

Within the grittier side of Boston’s underground scene lies garage rockers The Monsieurs, who want everyone to know that the ’70s aren’t dead. They’re one of those bands you have to search for, but the effort is worth it for a surprising mix of distorted vocals, garage hooks and a slew of early punk influences. Here’s “Shadow,” a track off their debut cassette.
