Metro’s Monday night TV breakdown.
‘The Story of Film: An Odyssey’
DOCUMENTARY. Part six of Mark Cousins’ epic, 15-part doc on cinema history focuses on the rise of 1950s melodrama and a growing awareness of film outside the U.S. TCM is also playing relevant films into the wee hours, including Akira Kurosawa’s pioneering “Seven Samurai.”
10:15 p.m., TCM
‘Mom’
COMEDY. Anna Faris is a genius, and since movies inexplicably don’t know what to do with her, maybe TV does. Watch her go toe-to-toe with Allison Janney as a recovering alkie shacking up with her mother, herself a recovering addict.
9:30 p.m., CBS
‘The Blacklist’
DRAMA. NBC just ordered a full season of this inside-the-mind-of-a-criminal drama because we all need a lot more James Spader being sinister. In Episode 3, notorious fugitive Red Reddington (Spader) helps FBI agent Liz (Megan Boone) track down serial killer Buffalo Bill. No, scratch that – they’re looking for a Chinese spy.
10 p.m., NBC
‘Hostages’
DRAMA. Dylan McDermott is so upset he can’t play charmingly sinister as well as James Spader that he tries to make surgeon Toni Collette botch an operation on the Commander in Chief. Come to think of it, that is pretty sinister.
10 p.m., CBS
