Halloween cover shows around town so good they’re scary

Normally, a bill that included The Jesus and Mary Chain, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Depeche Mode would be very expensive — and only somewhat plausible. Thanks to the magic of Halloween, however, a lineup not too far off will be at T.T. the Bear’s Place on Friday.

Technically it’s Eldridge Rodriguez, Ad Frank and Lifestyle mimicking the aforementioned legends, but good luck ever getting the real Nick Cave to perform for $10 a head at a 300-capacity club.

Halloween cover shows are a time-honored tradition around this town, which means there’s a whole mess of them going down this weekend, and through Halloween. Here’s a look at what other bands are being other bands around town for Halloween this year:

Great Scott

The cornerstone of Allston Rock City filled a whopping three nights with reverent sonic posturing. On the 25th, The Pill presents The Luxury, The Susan Constant and The Daily Pravda in the guises of The Verve, Metric and The Psychedelic Furs. Halloween and the night prior are so packed with punk, hardcore and metal songsters paying respects to the greats that it’s hard to know where to begin a description. Hopefully, Dan Webb and the Spiders’ set on the 31st can make us, if only for a little while, forget that Jay Reatard is dead.

The Middle East Downstairs

Rock bands aren’t the only musicians worth dressing up as. The kids are all about EDM these days, and they’ll dance themselves silly when Throwed DJs E-Marce, Jstrjr and Crime Pays assume the roles of Zedd, Diplo and Justice on Wednesday, Oct. 30. A more traditional rock ‘n’ roll party transpires on Friday, Oct. 25, when The Lights Out summon Tom Petty, The Field Effect ape Green Day, Magen Tracy and Leesa Coyne appear as Heart and members of Parks, Bent Shapes and Spirit Kid invalidate whatever “coolness”-cred they’ve amassed by playing a bunch of Eagles songs.

Radio

If a big band/cabaret act with some Tom Waits-y coarseness mirroring your childhood icons sounds as much fun as rock bands pretending to be more famous rock bands, be aware of The Steve Walther Orchestra’s rendition of The Muppets slated for Saturday the 26th in Somerville. Before that, rock bands Await Rescue, When Particles Collide and Interrobang pretend to be more famous rock bands Foo Fighters, Green Day and Radiohead.

The Cantab Lounge

Also on the 26th, a noisy guitar band attempts to emulate a noisy electro band when Death Waltz ‘76 (full disclosure: this writer is the drummer) does Mindless Self Indulgence. Digital duo Akisma dials its gloominess to desolate levels as Nine Inch Nails and, since I’ve already made myself known in those parentheses, I’m going to suggest that you dress in costume, even if you’re not going to be on stage. Maybe we’ll even have a costume contest.
