Middle school may conjure up bad memories of braces and unfortunate haircuts for most, but one 15-year-old is about to see her eighth grade year reimagined on the big screen.

Maya Van Wagenen was having a tough time fitting in at school, but instead of renting “Mean Girls” or consulting Seventeen magazine for tips, she turned to the 1950s book “Betty Cornell’s Glamour Guide for Teens.” She kept a diary of what it was like living out the old rules in modern times.

Penguin was so interested in her “Dear Diary” moments that they signed a six-figure deal with the teen, and now Dreamworks wants in on the action.

Amy B. Harris, the brains behind “Sex & The City” and “The Carrie Diaries,” signed on to the project to write the script. So is being a “rules” girl and wearing a girdle the key to middle-school popularity? Maya’s diary-cum-movie will reveal all.
