Winter Arts Guide – Dance

‘The Story of Stuff’
Through Saturday
BCA Plaza Theatre
527 Tremont St., Boston
$24-$99, 617-416-9726
Boston’s own Urbanity Dance presents their first annual holiday revue inspired by Anne Leonard’s animated short on consumerist societies.

‘The Slutcracker’
Through Dec. 24
Somerville Theatre
55 Davis Sq., Somerville
$20, 617-625-5700
The easiest way to describe this sexed-up “Nutcracker” is to say that it does to Tchaikovsky’s original ballet what Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” did to the Beach Boys’ “California Girls.” At any rate, it’s the only Christmas-themed show in town whose ads suggest “it might get you laid.”

‘Urban Nutcracker’
Through  Dec. 19
Wheelock Family Theatre
200 The Riverway, Boston
$20-$50, 617-879-2300
In the urban version of “The Nutcracker,” the big dancing rats are REALLY big.

‘The Nutcracker’
Through Dec. 31
The Opera House
539 Washington St., Boston
$35 and up, 617-695-6955
The rats aren’t quite so big in this more traditional production of the classic holiday ballet, but a dancing rat in tights is still a dancing rat in tights, no matter his size.

Dec. 3 through Dec. 5
Cutler Majestic Theatre
219 Tremont St., Boston
$43-$68, 617-482-6661
The 4-decade-old dance company brings some new premieres to Boston, including a collaboration with Steve Banks, head writer for “SpongeBob SquarePants.” Brings new meaning to squaredancing, no?

Balé Folclórico da Bahia
Jan. 22
The Opera House
539 Washington St., Boston
$36-$60, 617-482-6661
Afro-Brazilian culture, dance and music are on full, vibrant display with this merging of Capoeira, Samba de Roda and Afixire dances.

Savion Glover
Jan. 29
The Opera House
539 Washington St., Boston
$36-$60, 617-482-6661
The dude who made tap dancing safe again in a post-“White Nights” world taps into town with his latest piece, “SoLo in TiMe,” which combines tap and flamenco.

Shen Yun Performing Arts
Feb. 11 to Feb. 13
Citi Wang Theatre
270 Tremont St., Boston
$60-$165, 866-348-9738
Classical Chinese dance and music from thousands of years ago gets repped by this New York-based troupe intent on promoting pre-government suppression artistic traditions.
