Theater review: ‘Blogologues: Younger Than Springtime’

The team behind "Blogologues" brings your favorite Internet blogs, memes and tweets to life. Now running through May 5 at The Players Loft.

About eight months ago, we trekked out to the East Village to check out a show called “Blogologues.” It’s exactly what it sounds like – blog posts taken from across the Internet and then performed by a small troupe of comedic actors. When we reviewed the event, there were a few points of contention we raised. And this week, we were invited back to see how the show has progressed with time and to compare the experiences.

First of all, the show used to be held at Under St. Marks. Presently, the run takes place a short jaunt away at The Players Loft at 115 MacDougal. Last time, the theme was workplace shenanigans. This time, the show was dubbed “Younger Than Springtime” and focused on seasonal topics. Last time, it was $15 for admittance and a free drink; now the price for both has gone up to $18 (we feel this is steep for the hour-long show – it’s not really a free drink if you’re paying for it).

Overall, we enjoyed this iteration of the production even better than last time; the material seemed more focused, and we remember laughing out loud much more often. The theme of the show carried through for the most part, with sketches pertaining to allergies, spring fever and the great outdoors. A few items were well done but slightly out of place, such as an ode to Ryan Gosling and one strangely sentimental piece about Father’s Day. All of the actors held their own and balanced one another nicely. There were, unfortunately, some technical glitches – but these didn’t necessarily get in the way of the flow of the evening. The audience was supportive and enthusiastic as well, which always helps. As does a glass of wine or can of PBR before the comedy starts – but, unfortunately, there’s not really room to buy a drink again later and you’re left in that strange, pre-buzzed place from having had just one.

The current run of “Blogologues” takes place on weekends at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. through May 5. For additional information or to buy tickets, visit www.livelyproductions.org.
