One of the nation’s most prestigious dance academies, serving students ranging from toddler to young adult, Joffrey Ballet School is honoring its 60th anniversary today.

Special events include Twitter conversations hosted twice per month, along with community showings of the school’s heralded trainee and young dancer programs. There will also be a dedicated 60th anniversary event in October, though the planning is still in the works. The celebration will culminate with the seventh annual “Nutcracker” performance running Dec. 13-15, 2013.

In the meantime, you can also follow the school through its new anniversary-centric media channel hosted on Dancemedia.com. Weekly videos will be uploaded from today through Oct. 28, 2013, including mini-documentaries exploring the life of Joffrey Ballet School students. Videos are also cross-posted to Joffrey Ballet School’s YouTube channel.

The school got its start in 1953 through founders Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino, and has since become one of the most highly respected and widely known hosts of dance education, with a worldwide reputation both for the quality of its teachings and the students that it has turned out.

Its 60th year begins in September with Children’s and Young Dancer programs starting Sept. 9 with over 700 students, ballet and jazz trainee programs starting Sept. 16 with 262 students and the 30-member pre-professional Concert Company returning to rehearsal Sept. 9. There will also be auditions for new members starting Sept. 16.

Headquartered in Greenwich Village, the school also uses space at DNA and Pearl studios in NYC. Extension programs take place in Florence, Italy, and with the Bolshoi Ballet in Russia.
