Coming back for s’mores

Authors Sarah Huck and Jaimee Young on campfire cooking

Summer weather practically beckons you to take camping trips, and the next time you find yourself famished in the forest, Sarah Huck and Jaimee Young have some ideas for you.

The former cookie decorators, now cookbook authors, have penned an ode to the great outdoors with their new book, “Campfire Cookery.” They insist that their gourmet recipes, like Stone-Seared Cornish Game Hens with Bombay Spice and Grilled Peach-Amaretto Skillet Cakes, can be easily tackled on your next excursion into the wilderness.

“People have been cooking over fire forever and ever, and it’s really not that complicated,” Huck says.
“Once you get how to control the fire, you can do anything that you would normally do in your home kitchen,” Young adds. “You just have to understand how to control the heat, and we give the best directions we can give about it.”

But their book is more than just recipes: it’s a collection of recommendations for how to best spend your time while camping. Huck and Young offer instructions on what to pack and how to start a fire, as well as tips on stargazing, telling ghost stories and picking wild berries.

“The fanciful elements, to me, are the parts that make the book feel really special,” Huck says. “It’s the part that really sparks that sense of adventure that you feel when you’re camping. We tried to pull out all the activities that captured that experience.”
