The best kids’ books of 2013

Find out which books Parents magazine crowned the best of the year!

Best alphabet book: “Alphablock” by Christopher Franceschelli
Your kids will not only learn the alphabet with the help of this book but also what each letter looks like, thanks to the cutout shapes of each letter. And of course each page has fun, colorful drawings of objects that start with the letter represented.

Best pop-up book: “Animal Opposites: A Pop-Up Book” by Petr Horacek
Award-winning artist Petr Horacek lends his skills to this beautifully illustrated book that helps young readers learn their animals.

Best enhanced e-book: “Awesome Dawson” by Chris Gall
Teach your kids the value of recycling with a book that’s more subtle than corny. The story centers on a kid named Dawson, who turns trash into treasure.

Best early reader book: “The Big Wet Balloon” by Liniers
World-famous cartoonist Liniers wrote and illustrated this book, about  two sisters’ rainy day adventure.

Best older-kid chapter book: “Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library” by Chris Grabenstein
The quirky characters and silly scenarios will keep a smile on your child’s face from beginning to end.

Best board book: “Pinwheel” by Salina Yoon
The colorful pinwheel they can spin while reading will mesmerize babies and toddlers. The book’s short, rhyming tale is charming, but it’s the beautiful pages that really make it a winner.

Best new series: “Starring Jules” by Beth Ain
In today’s fame-obsessed culture, your little one will delight in Jules’ attempts to become a star – and will learn important lessons about friendship and family in the process.

Best fictional picture book: “Unicorn Thinks He’s Pretty Great” by Bob Shea
This short story is about a funny friendship between a unicorn and a goat who don’t get along at first, but are sharing a pizza by the end of the book. Reading it with your child is a good way to teach him or her about being nice to everyone on the playground.

Best nonfiction picture book: “Who Says Women Can’t Be Doctors?: The Story of Elizabeth Blackwell” by Tanya Lee Stone
Little girls and boys will both benefit from hearing the true story of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female doctor. Gender equality education begins early!

Best younger-kid chapter book: “The Year of Billy Miller” by Kevin Henkes
With its black-and-white sketches and themes of sibling rivalry and adventure, “The Year of Billy Miller” is reminiscent of Helen Hunt Jackson’s “Ramona” series. Only this time, the silly scenarios star a second-grade boy.
