Remembering Sandy Hook: A holiday read with heart
As the past week of media coverage has showed, the Sandy Hook tragedy is still fresh, especially in Newtown. If you’re looking for a way to honor the lost lives as we pass the one year anniversary mark, reach for Elizabeth Hand’s new book, “Chip Crockeet’s Christmas Carol.” Written by a classmate of Anne Marie Murphy, a teacher who lost her life in the shooting, the book is a modern day spin on “A Christmas Carol.”
In the book, Brendan is a music-loving lawyer who gets custody of his 4-year-old autistic son after getting divorced. Brendan’s best friend – and former bandmate – attempts to cheer him up and get him in the Christmas spirit.
One of the children killed in last year’s shooting was Dylan Hockley, an autistic child who died in teacher Murphy’s arms. All the proceeds to the book go directly to Autism Speaks in Murphy’s name, at the request of her family.
