Ellen’s Oscars selfie crashes Twitter
Last night’s Oscars were full of style, celebrities and selfies. 2013 was said to be the year of the selfie (it was even declared Word of the Year by Oxford English Dictionaries) but host Ellen DeGeneres brought the trend back as she hosted the 2014 Academy Awards on Sunday night. The acclaimed star went around the Oscars audience snapping selfies with other A-listers.
During a comic bit, Ellen tweeted this crowded selfie before the Oscars telecast was even over. Before midnight, the photo had been retweeted more than 2 million times. The photo went so viral it caused a backup on Twitter that crashed the website for more than 20 minutes after 10 p.m. EST, prompting Twitter to send out an apology.
The photo above quickly became an instantly famous snapshot of the 2014 Oscars. There has been more buzz around this selfie than the films and merits of the winning performances. Staring from top left, the photo includes: half of Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Lupita Nyong’o, Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, Ellen Degeneres, Bradley Cooper and Nyong’o’s brother, the only non-celeb to make the star-studded selfie.
The poorly framed self-portrait taken on a smartphone has already set a record for being the most tweeted photo in history – and the retweets continue.
