If you ask, they will fund it. On the heels of the successful Kickstarter campaigns for a Veronica Mars movie and Zach Braff’s follow up to Garden State, James Franco has decided to enter the crowdfunding game to subsidize his latest project.

The ‘This is The End’ star is seeking to raise $500,000 on the crowdfunding site Indiegogo in the hopes of developing three films based on his first published book, “Paolo Alto.”

“Because of who I am, people often believe that it is easy to find investors and distributors for my films,” Franco wrote on the Indiegogo page.“Unfortunately, things aren’t that easy. I will still fund part of it but I need of your help, filming three feature films back-to-back requires more funding than I can give.”

Both Braff and Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas set a stated goal of $2 million and exceeded that number within days. Braff’s effort in particular stirred up a heated debate over whether handsomely paid actors and directors should ask the public to fund their projects.

Franco’s goal for his “Paolo Alto” stories, though not as lofty, might not catch as much criticism as Braff’s “Wish I Was Here.” Franco promised to donate all proceeds from the three proposed films to Art of Elysium, a non-profit organization that encourages actors, artists and musicians to volunteer their time and talent to children who are battling serious medical conditions.

After one day, Franco’s Indiegogo campaign has raised more than $29,000, well on its way to exceeding expectations and convincing more actors that their next passion project is safest in the hands of those that will come to see it.
