The 10 best family holiday movies

Popping some popcorn, making a cup of hot chocolate and settling in for a movie night with the kids can be one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a snowy winter night. But it’s tricky to find a movie that’s age-appropriate for the younger set without making you want to roll your eyes at annoying songs or fall asleep from boredom.

Metro rounded up the 10 best holiday movies that everyone in your family is sure to enjoy. Nothing on the list is in black-and-white (kids, you’re welcome), and they aren’t cheesy either.

1. “Jingle All the Way”
Remember this ’90s classic? Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a father determined to get his son the toy of the year — Turbo Man — for Christmas. The problem: Christmas is just days away. Typical. Right, moms? You’ll totally be able to relate to this story while your kids will enjoy the silly slapstick comedy.

2. “Elf”
“Anchorman 2″ may be a taaaad inappropriate for family night, but this Will Ferrell movie is safe for all ages. Ferrell plays an elf who is singled out for being bigger than all the other elves at the North Pole, so he ventures to New York City in search of his real family. It’s hard to believe this movie came out 10 years ago, but the jokes have definitely held up.

3. “The Polar Express”
Virtually every parent enjoyed reading “The Polar Express” as a child, and the movie is even more magical than the book. There’s something about trains that most kids just find super cool, and “The Polar Express” is a lot more vivid than those “Thomas the Tank Engine” movies. The sentimental story and amazing graphics keep everyone watching.

4. “Home Alone”
This Chris Columbus classic never gets old. Seriously. Relive the days when Macaulay Culkin played a cute 8-year-old accidentally left by himself while his family is off on a Christmas vacation. You’ll enjoy the shenanigans he gets up to as much as your kids will.

5. “VeggieTales: Merry Larry and the True Light of Christmas”
This brand new Veggie Tales movie has a surprising twist: It’s narrated by Si Robertson of “Duck Dynasty.” In true VeggieTales form, Larry the Cucumber, Bob the Tomato and the other veggies tell the story of the true meaning of Christmas in their own, funny way. With songs by “Owl City” and “Tobymac,” the songs are less cheesy than you might expect.

6. “Shrek the Halls”
At only 30 minutes, this short movie is perfect to pop in if you’ve promised the kids they could watch a holiday flick, but you really want to get them to bed. Shrek (Mike Myers), Fiona (Cameron Diaz), Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and all the other Shrek favorites are back, telling their own versions of  ”The Night Before Christmas.” The clever writing allows for jokes you’ll appreciate, but are still appropriate for kids.

7. “The Nutcracker”
Your kids might not be able to sit through a ballet performance, but the movie version is something the whole family can get behind. Inject a little culture into your family night with this movie starring Elle Fanning and Nathan Lane.

8. “Frozen”
Disney’s new animated movie is killing it at the box office. Kristen Bell plays Anna, who ventures through the snow with a silly snowman (Josh Gad) to find her sister, whose winter magical powers have made it freezing cold all year long.

9. “The Santa Clause”
Whatever happened to Tim Allen? This ’90s movie was so successful that it spawned two follow-ups. In this original, Allen plays a man who is suddenly transformed into Santa Claus after the Big Man in Red dies falling off his roof. Your kids will love imagining what they would do if suddenly their own dad became Santa. The happy ending will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

10. “A Christmas Story”
Thanks to TBS playing “A Christmas Story” for 24 hours every Christmas Day, you most likely won’t have to rent this one to watch it. The ridiculous leg lamp. Ralphie in that pink bunny suit. There are so many moments that make “A Christmas Story” a holiday classic.
