Flags will fly at half-staff Monday at state buildings across New Jersey in honor of James Gandolfini.

The actor died last Wednesday in Italy, reportedly of a heart attack. He was 51.

Gandolfini was best known for his role as Tony Soprano in HBO’s hit series “The Sopranos,” which depicted life in a North Jersey mob family. He was born in Westwood, N.J., graduated from Park Ridge (N.J.) High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University.

“James Gandolfini was an iconic actor and will be remembered for the timeless impact he left upon television and film in the State of New Jersey and across our nation,” reads the executive order from Gov. Chris Christie’s office, issued Friday, calling for flags to be flown half-staff Monday.

Since “The Sopranos” ended its six-year run in 2007, Gandolfini made several big-screen appearances, including in “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Killing Them Softly.” He earlier had memorable performances in “True Romance” and “The Mexican.”
