The Word: Will ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ be bigger than its prequel?

J.J. Abrams’ 2009 “Star Trek” reboot was a smash hit, and its sequel “Star Trek Into Darkness” just may be an even bigger one. The new “Star Trek” film, starring Chris Pine and Benedict Cumberbatch, has already taken in $14 million at the domestic box office, according to Deadline. Paramount predicts that it’ll rake in $100 million over its four-day opening “weekend.” Hey, how come movie studios get to define longer and longer blocks of time as weekends now? If most of us tried that, we’d be out of a job.

The first “Star Trek” film of our time also opened huge, but didn’t perform as well overseas as most American blockbusters do. The studio has been working over time to improve on its performance this time around, including sending 20 minutes of footage  to overseas distributors earlier this year. It seems like it’s paid off: Overseas ticket sales already total over $40 million. Not bad for a guy who never even liked Star Trek.

“Star Trek Into Darkness” costar Zoe Saldana is doing her part to raise the film’s profile – she posed nude for an Allure spread, which also trumpets her weight (115 pounds) across the  cover.

Saldana also addressed the criticism she’s faced for the upcoming film in which she plays Nina Simone, a musician with significantly darker skin than hers. ”Let me tell you, if Elizabeth Taylor can be Cleopatra, I can be Nina — I’m sorry,” she says.
