The Word: Michael Douglas says oral sex caused his cancer

Michael Douglas, star of “Behind the Candelabra,” is a survivor of stage four throat cancer, and he has an unusual explanation for how he contracted it. He claims it comes from performing too much oral sex.

“Without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from cunnilingus,” Douglas told the Guardian.

HPV is most commonly associated with cervical and anal cancer in women, but it can indeed cause oral cancers in men. Most people just don’t own up to it so cheerfully. And why not? What possible better reason for cancer could there be? Too-many-mansions cancer? Saving-too-many-puppies-from-burning-buildings cancer?

Douglas added, “And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it.” This does not seem to be true. There is no medical reason why exposure to more HPV would cure HPV. But it’s a nice philosophy to live by: that if you’ve got the cunnilingus cancer, the only cure is to spend even more time downtown.

Douglas, who plays Liberace in “Behind the Candelabra,” recently spoke to Metro about meeting the pianist. “I met him once, briefly, when I was 12. At the time, my father [Kirk Douglas] owned a house in Palm Springs, close to Lee Liberace’s home. One sunny day, this Rolls Royce stopped in front of the house and Lee stepped out. He was wearing lots of gold and the sunlight was reflecting off his jewelry.

“He was a sort of pre-Elton John. He invited that style. He was a charming man. He loved entertaining and beautiful things.”
