The Word: Why Salma Hayek doesn’t exercise

Salma Hayek has to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. And she does it without the aid of a single hot yoga ballet bar class.

“I know people have always thought I was beautiful, but I have never tried to be as beautiful as I can be,” the 47-year-old told InStyle. “I could do a lot more—exercise, or not eat dessert. Or not drink alcohol. I could make bigger efforts. I don’t think my first priority in life has ever been beauty. It’s a little bit of a rebellious spirit in me. There is more to me than looks, of course.”

An admirable attitude! Of course, beauty could be Salma’s 84th priority and she’d still be ten times as gorgeous as the rest of us. But it’s good to know she’s pro-dessert and a booze fan. We have a lot in common, Salma and I. And if it means I get to look like her in my 40s, I’ll gladly eat all the pie she thinks I should.

Salma Hayek drew fire for comments in an interview with German Vogue that suggest she’s lost touch with her Mexican roots. “Honestly, I hardly had any memories of what it is to be a Mexican woman,” she tells the magazine when asked about filming “Traffic” 12 years ago. “My life is completely different now.” Blog Guanabee.com took offense to that, writing, “What did Salma mean by basically saying she forgot what it’s like to be a Mexican woman? That she’s too French and rich for our blood?”
