Chris Kelly, half of the early ’90s rap duo Kriss Kross, passed away May 1. On Monday, the Atlanta medical examiner’s office confirmed that his death was due to a drug overdose.

Kelly’s mother told police that he had used cocaine and heroin the night before his death, and had a history of drug abuse, according to People.

Chris Kelly was half of Kriss Kross, along with Chris Smith. They were discovered in a shopping mall by Jermaine Dupri and shot to fame while still teenagers with their 1992 hit “Jump.” They also toured with Michael Jackson and had several other hits, including “Tonite’s the Night,” although they never matched the success of “Jump.”

Speaking of troubled celebrity children, Michael’s own daughter Paris Jackson, 15, was rushed to a Los Angeles-area hospital in June after an apparent suicide attempt, her mother, Debbie Rowe, told “Entertainment Tonight.”

Paris, the second of Jackson’s three children, had “a lot going on (lately),” Rowe told the celebrity news show.

“We appreciate everyone’s thoughts for Paris at this time and their respect for the family’s privacy,” an attorney for Rowe said in a statement.

Celebrity website TMZ.com, which first reported the suicide attempt, said Paris had been taken from her home in Calabasas, Calif., by ambulance at about 2 a.m., citing unnamed sources.
