The Word: ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ isn’t that Age of Ultron

Marvel films recently revealed that the sequel to “The Avengers” will be called “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.” That raises plenty of questions for comic book noobs. But if it’s any comfort, comics superfans probably don’t know much more.

Ultron, apparently, is not a cleaning product or a new kind of tablet, but a vengeful robot who turns against humanity (which I suppose a tablet could also be). “Age of Ultron” is the name of a recent storyline in the Avengers comics, but director Joss Whedon says we shouldn’t expect the film to follow the same story. “It works very simply: This is Marvel cinema, not Marvel comics,” Whedon told io9. “One thing [Marvel Studios head] Kevin Feige has a genius for is knowing what to hold onto and what to let go of. You can invoke the feeling you had and play with the characters you love and remain true to the needs of the film.”

Apparently some comic fans are concerned by Marvel’s decision not to include the character Ant-Man in the film, since he’s Ultron’s creator. Personally, I do not think I could enjoy an action film that included a character named Ant-Man, so I think they made the right call.

One thing we know about the new film is that its stars will make bank, especially Iron Man.

It pays to be Tony Stark, both in the comic book world and in our world. Robert Downey Jr., who portrays Tony “Iron Man” Stark in the Iron Man and Avengers movies, earned an estimated $75 million last year, making him the highest-paid actor in Hollywood, according to Forbes.
