The Word: Nate Silver is going to predict the Oscars

Can statistics predict the Oscars? Credit: Twitter

Nate Silver’s statistical wizardry got us through a nail-biting election season in which his predictions proved eerily accurate — his statistical models for the New York Times correctly predicted the outcome of the presidential race in all 50 states. But now that the showbiz bug has apparently bitten him, will his crystal ball still be as clear?

Silver is leaving the New York Times for ESPN/ABC News, and according to Deadline one of his new duties will be predicting Oscar results (presumably both nominees and winners). It’s a little hard to see what they expect him to do — while there are certainly trends in the Oscars, the process is much more closed off than an election. It seems unlikely, for example, that he’ll be allowed to poll the Academy on which films they plan to vote for. But far be it from me to doubt the Great Silver’s powers. Maybe he’ll be able to plug in enough data points to tell us whether it’s finally Leo’s year. Actually I don’t think I need him for that. “The Great Gatsby” was lame.

Speaking of the Oscars, Seth MacFarlane will not be hosting next year’s show.

Taking to Twitter to announce the news, he wrote, “Traumatized critics exhale: I’m unable to do the Oscars again, tried to make it work schedule-wise, but I need sleep.”

I mean, it wasn’t critics who hated his hosting abilities. It was everyone.
