The Word: Penelope Cruz welcomes new baby with Javier Bardem

The good: When she was nominated in 2007 for Best Actress for “Volver,” Penelope Cruz’s choice of this Atelier Versace gown (complete with a feathered train) proved she was ready to enter Hollywood’s A-list. Credit: Getty Images

What a day for babies! Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem welcomed their second child yesterday. Penelope gave birth to a baby girl at Madrid’s Ruber Hospital. Baby Girl Cruz-Bardem is the second child for the couple, who are also the parents of Leonardo, 2.

Cruz and Bardem’s new daughter shares a birthday with Kate Middleton and Prince William’s baby boy, who was also born yesterday. This will be awkward if they attend the same preschool and they both want to hold their birthday parties on the same weekend, but only one of them can book the Chuck E. Cheese’s. I hope Britain and Spain don’t have to go to war over the issue.

Kate gave birth to a baby boy on Monday, their first child who will be third in line to the British throne, ending hours of fevered anticipation outside the London hospital where the child was delivered.

The baby was born with William at Kate’s bedside at 4:24 p.m. (11:24 EST) and weighed 8 lbs. 6 oz.

“The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news,” Clarence House, Prince William’s office, said in a statement.
