The Word: Rashida Jones and Rob Lowe leaving ‘Parks and Recreation’

Cast member Rob Lowe poses before a screening and panel discussion for the reunion of the cast of the 1992 movie
Rob Lowe plays Chris Traeger on the show.

After several years of stability, the “Parks and Recreation” cast will lose two key members at once this year. Rashida Jones, who plays “beautiful nurse” Ann Perkins, and Rob Lowe, who plays the impossibly cheerful Chris Traeger, will both exit the show this season after the 13th episode, set to air in February.

In a statement, showrunner Michael Schur confirmed that he was working on a story arc culminating in both characters’ exits. “We’ve been working on their storyline (on and off) for four seasons now, and heading into this year, with the two of them contemplating parenthood, it felt like a natural time to move them into the next phase,” he said in a statement.

I object strongly to any changes to my beloved “Parks and Rec,” but these are probably the two characters whose exit will disrupt the show the least. And hey, maybe Donna will get more screen time now.

“Arrested Development” star Will Arnett found a healthy and productive way to deal with his split from ex-wife and “Parks and Rec” star Amy Poehler: hitting the gym.

“If going to the gym obsessively for eight, nine months was my way of dealing, then let that be my worst problem,” Will tells Details magazine. “Life is challenging, and I’d say that there’s no guidebook — but there’s about a million guidebooks out there. All people have been doing since the dawn of time is trying to figure out how to live this life and be happy. I’m no different.”
