The Word: First official photos of the royal baby!

Prince William and Kate Middleton released their first official family portraits with their son Prince George yesterday.

The couple broke with royal tradition and had Kate’s father take the photos instead of a professional photographer. It’s sort of nice. They look very much like photos a dad would take: All blown out in back because there’s a big patch of sun behind them, everyone looking a bit stiff like they’re gritting their jaws through their smiles because they’ve been doing this for half an hour and the baby is starting to fuss, and one of Kate’s hairs has escaped from the shining coils of her perfect waves and just take the picture, Dad, for the love of God.

They also have dogs with them, perhaps because they have wisely realized that newborn babies look like grumpy potatoes. In any case, it’s a smart choice to up the cute factor. That’s the family dog Lupo next to Will and some random golden retriever at Kate’s feet.
