The Word: ‘Reality Bites’ is going to be a TV show
Better pack it in, other networks. NBC is about to corner that coveted nostalgic Generation X demo.
NBC is developing a TV comedy based on “Reality Bites,” the classic grunge comedy starring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, and Ben Stiller, according to Deadline. Stiller, who also directed the film, will produce the TV show. The single-camera comedy will follow Lelaina, the character Ryder played, and her video camera as she struggles to build a career in recession-plagued early-90s Houston.
I can’t decide if this sounds awesome or terrible. Maybe if they find a really great baby Winona Ryder. But does such a creature exist? I fear that today’s early twentysomethings could never understand the value of flannel and not smiling.
Ethan Hawke may play a former professional driver in his new film “Getaway,” but he didn’t get his start on a swanky race car.
“My first car was kind of sad,” Hawke told reporters Wednesday at a press conference. “My parents gave me for my 19th birthday this ancient Toyota Corolla and I loved it. I thought it was amazing and I drove it across the country. It was not aesthetically appealing in any way, it was not fast, it didn’t handle well, but it lasted forever and I drove it cross country and back. Then I gave it to my sister and she drove it for another 10 years.”
