Huge, huge spoiler alert for “Homeland.” Last night’s episode was as big a game changer as there’s ever been on TV, and if you follow the show and haven’t seen it, close your eyes and hum Christmas carols or something for the duration of this article.

So yeah. Wow, guys. It’s a little like if, at the end of the third season of “Friends,” instead of Ross and Rachel breaking up, Rachel got hanged for treason. Last night Carrie (Claire Danes) watched as her treacherous baby daddy Brody (Damian Lewis) was executed in Iran.

The most interesting thing about the show’s decision to kill off one of its original leads? They planned to do so a lot sooner.

“The original conception was, ‘Brody’s the bad guy, and it’s a one-season story for this tough chick in the CIA,’” Showtime President David Nevins told The Hollywood Reporter. “We slowed it all down, making it a long evolution of an interesting relationship. We wanted to be sure that she was much more complicated and unreliable than just your traditional good guy; and that he was much more nuanced and reasoned and thoughtful than your usual bad guy.”

One fan who won’t be too devastated by Brody’s exit is Lewis himself. Brody’s been absent much of this season, and Lewis was fine with that. ”You may never hear me say this again, but I didn’t miss me,” Lewis said. “And I was kind of surprised. I think what was in [Brody’s] place is so compelling and brilliant.”
