Why Shailene Woodley gave away her house

Go into the Young Adult section of your local bookstore. Close your eyes, spin around, and point. That book you’re pointing to? Shailene Woodley has already been booked to star in it.

Despite her status as Hollywood’s newest teen-movie It girl, however, Woodley isn’t living the high life – she’s adopted a famously spartan lifestyle. Woodley makes her own beauty products, lives out of a carryon suitcase, and gave her house away to her grandmother.

Why the extreme hippieness? Woodley explained her philosophy last night on Kimmel. Apparently, being a young movie star means being on the move so much that traveling light is actually the practical choice. ”I was only home for 15 days last year (home being LA),” she told Kimmel. “I got home and I was like, ‘I don’t want to be alone. I want to be with my friends and family,’ so, I got rid of everything just so I could have one suitcase that would be easy to transport between houses and just kind of couch surf for a few months.”

Woodley says her suitcase makes laundry day a snap. “But it’s so refreshing and it takes so much stress away when you’re like, ‘Ugh, I only have one pair of jeans to wash.’ It’s so nice.”

OK, I guess I can see how that would be appealing. I still don’t understand how Woodley could possibly live with so few possessions, even with that low maintenance bob hairstyle she rocks. I can barely live out of a carry on for a long weekend. And I very rarely have to attend movie premieres.
