Bone Marrow Drive

Thousands of fans are expected to be in attendance at MetLife Stadium as Virginia State University returns to the New York Urban League Football Classic to take on South Carolina’s Benedict College. Delete Blood Cancer and the New York Urban League will be onsite to spread awareness to attendees regarding Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) for National Sickle Cell Awareness Month as well as register potential bone marrow donors.

The effort to have Sickle Cell Awareness Month officially recognized at all levels began in 1983. Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) impacts millions of people throughout the world; according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 500 Black or African-American births. Many of the patients battling SCD and other life threatening blood cancers depend on finding a bone marrow match from un-related donors from their same ancestry. Their lives depend on people’s being aware of the importance for them to register as a donor and then their willingness to become a life saving bonemarrow donor.

Delete Blood Cancer will be onsite, registering healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 55 as potential bone marrow donors. The process is free, easy and takesless than five minutes.
