Crack the champagne, because Boston is nearing the end of what the National Weather Service has officially dubbed the snowiest winter in the city’s recorded history.
A Sunday evening snowfall of 2.9 inches nudged the city’s total to 108.6 inches this season, surpassing the 1995-1996 record of 107.6 inches. The record was officially set at 7 p.m. that night, just hours after thousands turned out for the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in South Boston. “Boston, you survived the snowiest winter on record!!!” the National Weather Service in Taunton wrote in a message on Facebook. The city endured multiple school closings as well as tedious MBTA delays that prompted the transit agency to offer a free fare day next month.
Mayor Marty Walsh nodded to the accomplishment on Twitter, writing: “Superbowls, World Series’, Stanley Cups, and snowfall records. We are truly a title city. There will be no parade. #titletown #bosnow.” Weather.com reports that in the last 21 years, Boston has had four of its five top five snowiest seasons.
The average seasonal snowfall at Logan Airport is 43.5 inches.
