Downtown Crossing may have lost Filene’s Basement, but the thrill of the hunt returns on Thursday with Boston’s DTX Swap, hosted by Amy Chase and Melissa Massello, who also jointly go by The Swapaholics.
Having hosted clothing swaps among their friends for years, Chase and Massello joined forces in early 2009 for one super-sized event.
“After hosting over 300 swappers, in the middle of a snowstorm, donating literally over a ton of clothing, we knew we were onto something big,” says Chase. “We hosted every swap together after that, officially as The Swapaholics, and are now completely addicted to swapping.”
While saving money and being green are two of the most obvious benefits of swapping, Chase and Massello explain that community and sharing are really at the core of what they do.
“Ever since Netflix and ZipCar became household names, people have started to realize that what some experts are calling ‘collaborative consumption’ is just plain common sense, and it can make us happier, too,” Massello explains. “We don’t really need to own that dress for life, we just need something to wear to our friend’s wedding. So, when we’re done, we share.”
