Winter skin care

Clinton Hardesty, education director at Elemis, shows us how to keep our
skin radiant — even when harsh weather conditions and indoor heating
are drying it out.

Apply SPF
“Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can set aside your SPF,” stresses Hardesty. “It is more important to use sunscreen during the winter because often — especially during snowy times — the reflective surface of the snow will actually increase the UV exposure dramatically.”

Eye cream = youth serum
It’s crucial to use an eye cream, advises Hardesty. “In the winter, you don’t have oil production around the curves around your eye area, so it’s much more susceptible to drying,” he says.  Also, an eye cream keeps you looking younger: “The eye area is the most susceptible part of your face to aging,” says Hardesty. “If you start protecting that area, you’ll look more youthful further down.”

Don’t go to bed without a night cream
“Your skin goes through a reparative, restorative phase at night, and that’s triggered by sleep — so finding a night cream that is especially oriented to the processes of your skin is very helpful during the winter,” says Hardesty. “Night creams are designed to work synergistically with what your skin is going through.”

Exfoliate
“Move away from granulated exfoliants in the winter and use more enzyme-based exfoliates, which are gentler,” says Hardesty.
