Wherefore art thou Sony?

You know, in addition to having their networks hacked and “losing” your credit card information, Sony also makes tons of great exclusive content for their video game consoles. Here are reviews of two  newly released games that may just make you want to risk the hack-friendly behemoth once again.

‘MotorStorm Apocalypse’

Console: Sony, PS3
Grade: 4 out of 5

In a way, the “MotorStorm” series is Sony’s nod to “Mario Kart.” Mindless action and total chaos are the orders of the day. This new iteration ups the ante even further, placing the racers in the middle of the apocalypse. You heard that right. You’ll be competing in a race instead of trying to find shelter for your loved ones. Nothing is more extreme than the end of the world.

The apocalyptic setting changes up the game play significantly. You have to compete against other racers and a disintegrating world. This adds a new, albeit difficult, element to the racing. Get used to memorizing where buildings are gonna fall. Racing online is still the same blast you remember, though.

‘SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs’
Console: Sony, PS3
Grade: 4 out of 5

The “SOCOM” series has been Sony’s unique shooter franchise since the first one launched in 2002. The series has you playing in the third person, as opposed to the first-person view of shooters like “Halo” and “Call of Duty.” SOCOM also differs from other shooters by being squad-based, meaning you control an entire squad of soldiers.

So how does the new one stack up? Fine, if not spectacularly so. One of its key strengths doubles as a slight weakness. You know how AI-controlled teammates in other games usually just stand in front of doors shooting at nothing because they suck? Your squad in this game is very good at what they do. So good, in fact, that the game tends to be downright easy. Difficulty settings and a robust multiplayer mode still make it a worthwhile purchase, though.
