NHL playoffs: Fans divided over hefty ticket price tag

Mario Livich, owner of ShowTimeTickets.com, holds the much-coveted tickets for the Stanley Cup Final outside the company’s office at Beatty Street yesterday.

Canucks fans are divided when it comes to doling out the big bucks for tickets to the Stanley Cup Final series against the Boston Bruins.

Aiden Wong, who already purchased tickets for Game 2 for $550, said the thrill of experiencing the game live makes up for the expensive price tag.

“I can see how if people aren’t fans they’ll think it’s pretty expensive but I’ve followed hockey my whole life, so it’s worth it,” Wong said.

Mario Livich, owner of ShowTimeTickets.com, said they have been seeing demand from all over the world and fans are showing intense interest in getting their hands on tickets whatever the cost.

“In the previous years, we’ve been the underdogs and nobody expected us to win,” Livich said. “People want to be there in that moment because that’s a priceless memory. People are prepared to pay anything for that memory.”

He said the price range for games 1 and 2 runs from $600 to $995, but expect to pay $1,500 just to get in the building for games 6 or 7.

But David Vo said he’s happy watching the action in a sports bar with his friends.

“If it feels like a Game 5 scenario where we would win the Cup, I would probably fork out some money and go watch the game but they’re really expensive,” he said.

Even first timers are getting in on the action.

Louise Doumet, who plans to watch her first live Canucks game with her father, said she’s willing to spend around $500.

“I think people do it for the excitement and the adrenaline rush,” she said. “You spend for the experience not just to watch the game.”

A limited number of single seat tickets for Stanley Cup final home games went on sale this morning via phone and Internet only starting at $197.25.
