Patriots reassert East dominance in win over Jets

Rob Gronkowski had two touchdowns in the Patriots' blowout.

The Patriots broke a two-game losing streak and defeated their AFC East rivals in the process as they blew out the Jets, 37-16.

What went right …

1. No end in sight

Rob Gronkowski is quickly establishing himself as the best offensive tight end in the NFL. He caught two touchdown passes in the game, bringing his season total to eight. He was a terror for the Jets’ secondary all night — especially in the red zone.

2. Tip drill

Just a few plays after the touchdown that wasn’t by Gronkowski, Mark Sanchez threw a pass that was tipped by the receiver coming out of the backfield and intercepted by Rob Ninkovich. The Patriots methodically marched the ball down the field, including a third-down QB sneak by Tom Brady, before completing a third-down TD pass to Gronkowski. This one didn’t need a review and made the score 23-9.

3. Ninko-who?

Ninkovich didn’t just have the big interception to set up Gronkowski’s second touchdown catch, he also had a touchdown of his own. With the Jets down two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, Ninkovich picked off Sanchez deep in Jets territory and waltzed into the end zone to close out any chance of the Jets coming back. He had two career interceptions before last night.

What went wrong …

1. Safety dance

After staking themselves to a 6-0 lead on two Stephen Gostkowski field goals, Tom Brady and the Pats were backed up in their own end. Brady, under heavy pressure in the end zone, threw the ball into the turf and was called for intentional grounding and a safety. The Jets marched for a TD on the ensuing possession.

2. Gronked out

The Pats appeared to have a huge touchdown after Brady showed inhuman elusiveness and found Rob Gronkowski in the end zone. The score would’ve put them up 20-9 in the third. Instead, Gronkowski had stepped out of bounds and the score was overturned. They settled for a field goal.

3. What’s the rush

To say the Patriots had no running game would be an understatement. They had 36 yards rushing at the end of the third quarter and their leading rusher was Danny Woodhead with 13 yards.
