Pats-Colts lacking the luster of previous AFC showdowns

Get pumped football fans, the week is finally here!

Patriots! Colts! Tom Brady! Peyton — Dan Orlovsky?

Dan Orlovsky.

A game that is usually circled on schedules as being one of the season’s best is nothing more than an easy win for the Patriots.

The Colts are 0-11 heading into Sunday afternoon’s game against the Patriots (it was “flexed” out of the night game), and Colts third-string quarterback Orlovsky — who led the winless Lions three seasons ago — is set to take the first-team snaps in Foxboro, after the Colts announced Monday that Curtis Painter is done as the replacement to injured Peyton Manning.

Now, the Patriots are scrambling to prepare for a quarterback they hadn’t planned on seeing.

Kidding, of course.

How quickly will this get out of hand? Vegas can’t even put a number on it. The Pats opened as 21-point favorites, and that number will surely rise.

Prior to the news of Orlovsky getting the starting job, Belichick said of the quarterback,

“Orlovsky has played in there as well; he’s seen some action. He’s a strong kid, a real pocket-type quarterback that can read defenses and get the ball downfield or follow out the read progressions and take their second or third receivers. I think in the mold of what you’ve seen from the Colts in the past.”

Whatever you have to say to keep the guys awake in the film room, Bill.

The Colts also fired defensive coordinator Larry Coyer on Monday, which may or may not (most likely not) spark a defense that has given the Patriots trouble in the past.
