March Madness: Final Four set

Bill Self has his Kansas Jayhawks back in the Final Four.

After another wild weekend of college basketball action, the Final Four is set.

It will be Louisville vs. Kentucky to decide the left side of the bracket. And Kansas vs. Ohio State on the right side. Both games will tip-off Saturday in New Orleans.

We’re assuming you watched the games … so here’s a few things we saw Sunday afternoon:

» We know we’re stating the obvious here, but Marv Albert is the best commentator in the business and can pretty much announce anything he wants. We bet he’d even be good at a wedding. His booth mate, Steve Kerr, is not too shabby, either. With Gus Johnson gone, they are far and away the best announcing tandem at CBS.

» Kentucky is filthy. In a good way, of course. The Wildcats’ average margin of victory in four tourney wins is about 14 points per game. They are simply deeper, longer, bigger than everyone and probably could give the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats a run. But why did John Calipari keep Anthony Davis in the game with a 23-point cushion?

» Speaking of Davis, can you imagine the potential championship match-ups underneath the hoop … Davis vs. either Jared Sullinger or Thomas Robinson has us drooling in our Wheaties. Robinson (18 points) might have played his best game of the tourney in Kansas’ 80-67 win over UNC.

» Win or lose next weekend, Bill Self deserves to be named Coach of the Bracket (yes, we just made this award up). Even though his Jayhawks entered as a No. 2 seed, he’s done the most with the least. Well done, now go take a leak.

» Love Jones for Perry Jones. Critics of PJIII have called him soft, not a true leader, immature, whatever. The kid came to ball Sunday on the biggest stage. PJIII (17 points, 8 rebounds) single-handedly willed Baylor back into it for a five-minute stretch in the second half, despite playing hurt.

» Here’s what we learned during the commercial breaks: Subway’s campaign, promoting new Italian-inspired sandwiches, is borderline racist. Or at the very least, play on old (unfunny) stereotypes … the Chevy Volt seems like a nice car option, but how many hippies are watching the NCAA Tournament? … Alec Baldwin is a legit pitchman … and we’re about to grab a tube of Axe Anarchy.

» We are Marshall. Would North Carolina have beaten Kansas if they had a healthy Kendall Marshall? We’re not completely sold, but they definitely lacked poise in their halfcourt sets without the star point guard. While the national media will harp on this fact to death, we’d also like to say that Stilman White (4 points, 7 assists) played pretty well. He was a pesky defender and finished without a single turnover. Of course, he shouldn’t have been the one taking shots in crunch time.

» Home cooking wins the day. Kentucky, playing 280 miles away from campus, had a virtual home game in Atlanta and the crowd didn’t disappoint. Baylor got the Rupp treatment. Kansas did the same with nearby St. Louis serving as a makeshift Allen Fieldhouse.
