Fantasy sports: Early injuries strike, uphill climb begins

Jacoby Ellsbury

Baseball players would benefit from taking a gander at the Stanley Cup playoffs.

These hockey tough guys take pucks off their knees, punch each other in the head and slash each other with sticks. Then, they go back out there looking for more.

For a noncontact sport, baseball players end up hurt at a relatively high rate. And the start of this season has been no different.

Speed to burn
Jacoby Ellsbury damaged his shoulder while trying to do what he does best — steal a bag. He’ll miss at least six weeks, leaving a gaping hole for owners in the speed category. Never fear, however. We can get by in the short-term with waiver guys like Gerardo Parra, Juan Pierre, Jordan Schafer and Dee Gordon.

Mr. Wilson

Not paying for saves on draft day is the right play for a reason. Brian Wilson (elbow) is done for the year, meaning Santiago Casilla needs to be owned.

Pop is missing
Arizona’s outfield is banged up already. Chris Young is on the DL and Justin Upton could soon be joining him. Power is hard to come by cheaply, so we’ll have to take a beating in average to get it. But Lucas Duda and Cody Ross will keep packing a punch.

Baseball waivers

Early-season pickups can pay huge dividends later on:

1. Zack Cozart, SS, CIN — The former second-round pick is entering his prime at age 26 and finally playing every day.

2. Nolan Reimold, OF, BAL — A post-hype kind of sleeper that is locked into the leadoff spot.

Raider rock
In seven games with Carson Palmer last season, Darrius Heyward-Bey racked up 37 catches for
541 yards and three touchdowns. The bust label is gone and the arrow is pointing up. There’s a lot of midround value here.
