Explaining Boston’s love affair with Fenway

Fenway Park is a magical place and everyone who has ever stepped foot in the old ballyard has their own reasons as to why.

I know because any male Red Sox fan worth his salt who happens to be over the age of 25 will tell you that he’s nostalgic for ‘the trough.’

Yes, this is the only place in the universe where it’s possible to get misty eyed over a urinal.
Of course, there are plenty of other more sanitary reasons as to why Fenway is the greatest baseball arena in the world.

One of the main reasons is because it links generations. To some, that may sound corny. But baseball, more than any other sport, leans on its history every single day.

Left field has always been particularly special to Boston fans, not just because of the Monster. Some of the greatest to ever play the game have occupied that spot.

Ted Williams took a break from re-writing the record books at the plate out in left. Yaz’ knees buckled out there in ’78 when Bucky Dent blooped his infamous home run over the wall. Manny Ramirez both amused and infuriated in left.

While you may not tell your grandkids about Darnell McDonald, there’s little doubt that left field will forever be a legendary 20×20 yard patch of grass that will spark conversation between old and young.

Fenway has always been Boston’s little link to the past and everyone’s got a story.

Here’s to 100 more years.
