Aly Raisman wins bronze medal on beam after near heartbreak

Aly Raisman captured the individual bronze medal on the beam Tuesday in London.

Aly Raisman can’t catch a break in London … or so it seemed for several stomach-churning minutes Tuesday.

In what will likely amount to her final day as a U.S. Olympic gymnastic sensation, Raisman finished a controversial fourth in the balance beam competition. The crowd, BBC announcers and Raisman’s thousands of Twitter followers were momentarily outraged and the hurt could have been outstanding considering that Raisman had already been on the losing end of a tie-breaker in an individual event just a few days earlier.

This time, however, a bit of Olympic justice was served. An inquiry was made about her 14.966 score and it was soon-after bumped up to another tie for third with Romania’s Catalina Ponor. Raisman’s execution on the beam was higher and due to yet more tie-breaker rules, she was given the bronze medal.

It was the Needham native’s first individual medal of the games after she had won team gold last week. Raisman will look to add to the collection this morning (EDT) in the floor routine final.

NBC will show the event on tape delay beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
