Sidescroller: Fall gaming preview

The gang’s all here in “PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.”

Summer is typically a dry season for the gaming industry. The big publishers, safe in their illusion that gamers actually go outside, hold the big releases for fall. Well, guess what? Summer is fading faster than the Arctic Circle. Here is the stuff you’ll be playing in the next few months.

Nintendo Wii U

Release date: November
Nintendo’s follow-up to its massively successful Wii is almost upon us. The hook? A rather large touchscreen controller (think iPad) that is not only used as a second screen but also can be used to stream games when someone else wants the TV. The tyranny of that one roommate who doesn’t know when to quit playing video games is finally over.

On the games front, the big N has prepped an adequate, if not great, launch lineup for the system. Be on the lookout for a new sidescrolling Mario title, a zombie adventure and a collection of controller-specific mini-games.

‘Halo 4′
Console: Xbox 360
Release date: Nov. 6
There is no better respected name in first-person shooters than “Halo;” Master Chief single-handedly put Microsoft on the home console map. On the docket for the first installment of this new trilogy? A four-player cooperative story mode that is split up into episodes like a television show. Also, the map editing tool is receiving a much-needed upgrade.

‘PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale’
Console: PS3/Vita
Release date: Nov. 20
Sony is getting into the mascot fighter genre that has been Nintendo’s bread and butter. Imitation aside, it still looks like a fun fighting game that will remind you just how deep Sony’s bench is. PaRappa the Rapper, Ratchet, Clank and even Nathan Drake — the gang’s all here.
